News Editor

I produce, program and edit news for one of the top online news networks in Canada. I scour the Internet for the top stories of the day to either add provider copy to our site or recommend topics for reporters. I manage the social media, including Facebook and Twitter for the news department and am always looking for new ways to increase engagement. I also write features that have ranged from the affects of interprovincial migration on the economy to the largest model railroad club in Canada being forced to relocate. I shoot and edit photos for the features.

Associate News Editor

Write, edit, program and produce news for one of the top online news networks in Canada. I seek out buzz-worthy stories and write articles often adding extra context and a Canadian angle to the original story. I take, source and edit images, program the news pages and manage the social media and search engine optimization for the news department.

NBC Nightly News, 2010

Runner
Assisted the anchors, including Brian Williams and Lester Holt, reporters and producers in many different areas to help the national nightly news run smoothly leading up to and during the Olympics Games in Vancouver. In addition to runner duties, I researched and chased characters, field produced, pitched story ideas and wrote.

York Region Rapid Transit, 2009-2010

Write, manage and post all content for all social media tools including a blog, Twitter account, Facebook page and Youtube channel. I also shot and edited sections for promotional videos, did public and media relations, helped develop and updated the website and stayed on top of new technology in marketing and communications.

Global News, Toronto, 2008 – 2009

Online Producer, Assignment Coordinator & Editorial Assistant
Worked with the assignment desk and reporters researching, chase producing and interviewing people for a daily news show. I also wrote the RSS feed, updated the website, assigned cameras to cover events, filtered press releases and news tips and spoke to police to get the latest on events and incidences.

BUSINESS NATION ON CNBC, 2008

Free-lance field producer, cameraperson and production assistant for the Colorado segment of a piece on the oil sands and the prospective new oil shale. My main responsibilities involved filming interviews with the Governor and a head of Shell Energy as well as much of the b-roll around the state, lighting the interviews and assisting the producer.

DAN RATHER REPORTS ON HDNET, 2007

Co-producer of internationally broadcast report on Insite, a safe injection site in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. My primary responsibilities were researching the characters and pre-interviewing them as well as filming b-roll of Vancouver. I also wrote a majority of the second act of this program, which focused on efforts to apply the “harm reduction” principle to prostitution.

THE UBC UBYSSEY, 2007 to 2008

Multimedia Editor/Sports Editor

Write and edit sports stories, including a recent piece about the Shrum Bowl, in which I detailed last 30 years of the UBC/SFU rivalry. As multimedia editor, I produce video pieces for the paper’s website in which I report, film and appear on camera for stories ranging from a fire hydrant running for the student government to streeters that try to gauge student reaction to particular issues.

GLOBAL MORNING NEWS, TORONTO, 2007

In addition to typical intern duties of chase producing, field producing live remotes and assisting the senior producer, I had the chance to produce and edit a piece about Wakestock.
